Settlers of Catan--Jump Start January Day 3

Day 3!

First of all super huge, major, squishy-hugged thank you to everyone who participated in the No Kiss Blogfest yesterday! I can't believe that was the fourth one! You guys were awesome and all brought the swoon to 2013. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

And now for today's post, I'm going to talk about my new, and sudden obsession with The Settlers of Catan.

Playing Settlers of Catan--Mallis Style--on New Years Day.
For the record, I'm a huge game nerd. And by game nerd, I mean board games! I haven't played any electronic games since my Super Nintendo died. I know, I'm old school. But seriously, I challenge you to any game of Super Mario Brothers. Any game at all!

Anyway, I love playing board games and I'm a huge fan of Game Nights and luckily have a few friends who regularly host them. Also, the fact that I have 4 siblings means I have a built in group of people who will play games with me for life! WIN!

But recently...as in 2 weeks ago, I discovered Catan. And by discovered, I mean I walked past it in the bookstore, got curious and read a bunch of reviews claiming it was the Best. Game. Ever!

Best Game Ever? Well I needed to get me some of that!

So I bought it and immediately recruited my siblings (home for the holidays) into a game.

Let me tell you something. This game is NOT simple (at first). It came with 16 pages of instructions. We set the game up and started playing, trying to follow the instructions the best we could. But the game sort of played like this:

Sister: I'm doing X!

Me: NO! You can't! That's not legal!

Sister: Since when? You did it on your turn.

Me: I know, but I just reread the instructions.

Sister: UUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

And there were a few of these:

Me: New rule! I mean....not new rule. But I just learned it. So new to us! New rule from now on!

Brother: I HATE new rules!

Anyway, this game is SUPER fun, super addictive and it only took me two whole weeks to actually win (my siblings are extremely competitive and strategic punks). And now we know all the rules. So that's a bonus. And practically every game ends with an immediate, "Let's play again!"

How many of you have played this game? Are you as addicted as I am? Should I go and buy some of the expansion packs? Will you invite me to your Game Night?

See you guys tomorrow for Day 4!

  1. I've never played this but I have four kids and, when I can get them all in the same place, we love to play games. We normally go for something simple. Catchphrase and Scattegories are definite faves.

But I'll have to check this one out. Although, I'm not going to lie. Sixteen pages of rules is seriously daunting. Is it a strategy game (like Risk?) Cause I kind of suck at those. Comes from having a completely illogical mind. haha

    1. It's really not that hard to play--it just feels that way at first. But if you read through it (its not like its a heavy 16 pages and there's lots of pictures) and just kind of play and figure it out as you go along like we did--its worth it. It's a bit strategy and luck mixed.

  2. I love Settlers of Catan! If you want an expansion, definitely try out Cities and Knights. It's the one that adds the most to the game, I think.

My hubby and I are big board game fans too. We like the complicated (but not too complicated) ones, so if you are up for more fun, try Ticket to Ride (any version, though I prefer Europe) or Small World. Both are great adventures.

  3. OMG I LOVE THIS GAME. I first played it in October when I visited college friends. Had never heard of it, but I was hooked. Our game lasted 4 hours, and the next night we all played it again. I'm still going through SOC withdrawal.

    1. OMG--4 hours? WOW! Were you playing with just the regular or were there expansions added on? I think I have withdrawal too and I only played 2 days ago!

  4. Frankie, after all these years, I just learned you're into games! We love Catan (Graeme, especially) and have several expansions. Now we're into Carcassonne, too. We can show you that one some time.

PS: This is Janine. I never sign in.
